● REC  ·  EP 01  ·  THE ORIGIN STORY

Hi, I'm Amir.
I make memories.

Also candles. But mostly memories.

A few years ago I was cleaning out my parents' garage and I opened a box of old sweatshirts. One of them belonged to a kid I had a crush on in 7th grade — I'd borrowed it and never given it back. (Sorry, Brendan.)

It still smelled like him. Or, more accurately, it smelled like being twelve. I sat in the garage on the floor for twenty minutes. I couldn't stop smelling it. I hadn't thought about that entire year of my life in over a decade, and suddenly the whole thing came back.

That's when I got obsessed with how smell works. The way it skips your brain's logic circuit and goes directly to the feelings part. How you can forget a whole year of your childhood until you smell a specific brand of fabric softener and suddenly you're back in your mom's kitchen.

So I started making candles. Not “eucalyptus and lavender” candles. Specificcandles. Candles with names like memories. I wanted to build a whole library of the moments nobody makes scents for — the Blockbuster on Friday night, the cinnamon pretzel at the mall, your dad's garage on a Saturday morning.

Home Video is for people who feel things too deeply and have a strong opinion about the year 2003. Which is most of us, honestly. We just haven't admitted it yet.

how a candle gets made

Four steps. No shortcuts.

01 · the memory

It starts with a conversation. I'll be talking to a friend and one of us will say “oh my god, do you remember the smell of…” and we know we have a candle.

02 · the research

I dig through old yearbooks, ads, packaging photos, Reddit threads, TikTok comments. What did people actually say this smelled like? What are the specific details?

03 · the formulation

I work with a perfumer to build the scent in layers. The top note is the “oh wait, I know this” hit. The middle is the actual memory. The base is the emotion.

04 · the testing

I send 20 samples to 20 friends who were there. If even one person says “how did you…” — we know it's right.
